Sergio Pérez returned to Formula 1 after a year away and did not disappoint. The Mexican outperformed Valtteri Bottas and established himself as the new team’s leader both on and off the track. Cadillac rewarded his work and performances with a new long-term contract, committing the Mexican to the team until 2029.

Home favourite Pérez has a packed schedule this week. The Mexican race weekend traditionally brings a host of marketing commitments for him, and Cadillac is looking to make the most of his popularity. The highlight is the announcement of his contract extension, which, according to the official statement, will run until at least the end of the 2029 season.

Pérez has thus relaunched his career in perfect fashion, although he needs Cadillac to improve next season so he can at least get in the mix at the back of the midfield. His performances on his return have earned him respect, however, and he even became the subject of driver market speculation when reports emerged that Williams had considered him as a replacement for Carlos Sainz should the Spaniard move to another team.

By signing a new contract, however, Pérez has reaffirmed his commitment to the Cadillac project. “Joining Cadillac Formula 1 Team from day one was a project I truly believed in, and extending my commitment feels like a natural continuation of this chapter,” said Pérez after signing the new deal.

“Building a Formula 1 team from the ground up takes time, relentless work and patience, but the progress we are making together is incredibly rewarding. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and I am fully committed for the next three years,” the Mexican continued.

“I want to thank Dan (Towriss), Mark (Reuss), and everyone at TWG Motorsports and General Motors for the opportunity to build on what we have started together. To every member of this special team, at the track, in the US, the UK, and our fans, thank you for your support and trust. I won’t let you down. Let’s keep pushing!” Pérez promised.

The team’s chief executive Dan Towriss also commented. “Building a competitive team in F1 is a long-term journey, and securing Checo’s talent and leadership gives us the continuity and commitment we need to build on the strong foundation established in our first year,” the American businessman said.

“Together, we are focused on the next phase of our journey, pushing the team forward and making progress up the grid,” added Towriss.

By signing the new contract, Pérez celebrated not only his home race but also the milestone of his 300th Formula 1 Grand Prix.

As is traditional, the Mexican race weekend fell at the end of October, coinciding with All Saints’ Day, known in Mexico as Día de los Muertos.

The weekend’s “ofrenda”, a kind of altar intended to welcome the souls of the dead back among the living, features all the great figures from Formula 1 history. Even Hamilton’s dog Roscoe has been included.

Herta and Hirakawa also set to take part in first practice in Mexico

Cadillac has confirmed that Colton Herta will drive in first practice in Mexico. It will be his fifth free practice appearance this season, although the regulations require each team to give rookies at least four outings. Cadillac is clearly doing this to help Herta reach the 40 points needed for a super licence. Will he get Bottas’s seat too?

Ryo Hirakawa will drive for Haas in Mexico. That means the outing will not go to Rafael Camara, who will race for the team next season and would certainly benefit from some mileage in this year’s car.
