Ferrari have set the fastest time for a fifth consecutive practice session, once again courtesy of Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque topped the timesheets despite a session that was far from trouble-free.

That also helps explain why Lando Norris and George Russell were only a tenth of a second behind: Leclerc’s qualifying simulation did not go to plan. He made an impressive start on fresh softs, setting two purple sectors, but went off at Turn 12. His second attempt went even worse, as he locked up at the very first corner. His eventual best time therefore came on a well-used set of soft tyres.

Lando Norris feels he could take the fight to Ferrari. During second practice, he asked his engineer how he compared with Leclerc’s times. The defending champion sat out first practice, so in theory he should have more room for improvement than the well-sorted Ferrari.

George Russell was just three thousandths of a second behind Norris. An intriguing battle for pole position appears to be in prospect, and Kimi Antonelli will certainly want to be part of it. Celebrating his title with a victory would be a fitting way to round off a successful season.

Liam Lawson and Max Verstappen provided some unexpected drama in second practice. The pair collided during the session, despite being almost team-mates. Verstappen tried to pass Lawson at Turn 12, but the Racing Bulls driver refused to give up the position and remained side by side with Verstappen through the next corner.

There was not enough room for both of them at Turn 14, however, and they made contact. Debris was left on the track, forcing race control to bring out the red flag. “He just straight up ran into me. Just like he literally does every single weekend!” said Liam Lawson, furious with Max Verstappen. The stewards summoned the Dutchman to a hearing.

Verstappen and Hadjar finished fifth and sixth, ahead of the Racing Bulls drivers, who were split by Pierre Gasly. Oscar Piastri rounded out the top 10.

Lewis Hamilton completed only half of second practice. His power unit began misfiring in the third sector, leaving the seven-time champion without power. His engineers instructed him to park the car to maximise the chances of salvaging the unit. Its fate is currently unknown.

Dakar Rally announces replacement venue for 2027 event

The Dakar Rally announced a week ago that January’s event would not take place in its originally planned location, Saudi Arabia. The legendary rally will instead follow an alternative route through Portugal and Morocco.

The prologue will start at the Algarve circuit. The first full stage will follow the coast of Portugal and Spain. Competitors will then head to Morocco, where they will tackle a further eleven stages, finishing in Marrakesh.

The total distance of the 2027 edition will be 7824 kilometres.

Alonso: Antonelli is a great champion, he makes no mistakes and never has a bad race

Fernando Alonso may have criticised the drivers at the back of the field, but he is also happy to give credit where it is due. “Kimi Antonelli has brushed against perfection; he’s a great champion. He never makes mistakes or has bad races. So that consistency and that winning spirit have been, probably, the best thing of this year for him.”

“He will become a champion this weekend, and he’ll celebrate on Sunday night. I hope we can crash the party!” said the 2005 and 2006 world champion with a smile.

A Mexican ofrenda featuring F1 champions and Roscoe

As is traditional, the Mexican race weekend fell at the end of October, coinciding with All Saints’ Day, known in Mexico as Día de los Muertos.

The weekend’s “ofrenda”, a kind of altar intended to welcome the souls of the dead back among the living, features all the great figures from Formula 1 history. Even Hamilton’s dog Roscoe has been included.

A full rundown of the young drivers taking part in first practice at the Mexican Grand Prix

    – McLaren: Leonardo Fornaroli (in place of Lando Norris)

Lando Norris’s LN4 Fusion team secures a Formula 2 entry

Lando Norris’s junior team LN4 Fusion has secured a place on the Formula 2 grid for the 2027 season. That means it will compete in all the major junior categories: Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula Regional, Italian Formula 4 and German Formula 4.

Herta and Hirakawa also set to take part in first practice in Mexico

Cadillac has confirmed that Colton Herta will drive in first practice in Mexico. It will be his fifth free practice appearance this season, although the regulations require each team to give rookies at least four outings. Cadillac is clearly doing this to help Herta reach the 40 points needed for a super licence. Will he get Bottas’s seat too?

Ryo Hirakawa will drive for Haas in Mexico. That means the outing will not go to Rafael Camara, who will race for the team next season and would certainly benefit from some mileage in this year’s car.
